How to capture thumbprints in the Notary eJournal

Capturing thumbprints in your notary journal is a requirement only in the State of California, yet it is often practiced by notaries public in other states in an attempt to log as much information as possible to protect the notary public from lawsuits & liability. Whether or not a notary public chooses to (or is required to) capture thumbprints in their notary journal, we have finally addressed the biggest hurdle to digitizing the notary journal - enabling a notary public to digitally capture and affix a thumbprint to an electronic notary journal entry. Follows the steps below to learn about the process

Important

Capturing a digital thumbprint requires a bluetooth thumbprint scanner that must be purchased by the notary public separately.

After years of testing, we chose to build our back-end around the most advanced and affordable bluetooth scanner available to consumers - the SecuGen Unity 20 Bluetooth. To view and order your SecuGen Unity 20 from, click here

Step Four

Click “Test Fingerprint Capture” to perform a test scan to ensure your device is working properly.

Now you’re ready to go!

Note - you do not need to connect the Bluetooth device to your phone via your phone’s Bluetooth settings. This connection process takes place entirely within the app

Once you have tested your device and ensured that it is functioning properly, you can proceed with your signings with confidence. When performing a notarization and creating an entry in your Notary eJournal, simply turn on your SecuGen Unity 20 when you are prompted to capture the signers thumbprints, click “Connect”, and capture the signers prints with ease. You do not need to perform the above testing steps every time you capture thumbprints.
